                <title><![CDATA[Así se alimenta una hoja de roble y otras asombrosas imágenes premiadas en el concurso de microfotografía Nikon Small World 2021]]></title>

    <p>Como todos los años por estas fechas se anuncian los ganadores del certamen <strong>Nikon Small World</strong>, concurso patrocinado por la división de instrumentos de la conocida marca y que premia, <strong>hace ya 47 años</strong>, las mejores imágenes de <a href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/tag/fotografia-microscopica">fotografía microscópica</a>. Una compleja disciplina cuyas imágenes siempre resultan asombrosas, porque muestran cosas que el ojo es incapaz de ver y <strong>nos descubren un mundo fascinante</strong>.</p>
<!-- BREAK 1 --><!--more--><p>El primer premio de este año fue para la foto que habéis visto en portada, realizada por <strong>Jason Kirk</strong>, y que muestra los tricomas (los apéndices blancos), estomas (los poros morados) y vasos (las zonas en color cian) de una hoja de roble vivo del sur (un árbol perennifolio nativo del sur de los EE.UU). La imagen fue realizada <strong>con un microscopio hecho a medida</strong> por este científico durante la pandemia con el objeto de practicar la microfotografía en su propia casa.</p>

<p>Jason, que dirige el <em>Optical Imaging &amp; Vital Microscopy Core</em> del <a rel="noopener, noreferrer" href="https://www.bcm.edu/research/atc-core-labs/optical-imaging-vital-microscopy-core">Baylor College of Medicine de Houston</a>, cuenta cómo ha “<em>aprendido mucho de la comunidad científica, habiendo pasado más de 20 años en este campo haciendo microscopía a un nivel bastante alto. Pero también he aprendido mucho de la gente del entorno de los aficionados. Small World es una gran combinación de estos dos ámbitos, y es algo que no se suele ver habitualmente</em>".</p>

<p>Sobre la toma, el autor destaca que <strong>lo más complicado fue la iluminación</strong>: “<em>Los objetivos del microscopio son pequeños y tienen una profundidad de enfoque muy reducida. No podría simplemente colocar una luz gigante al lado del microscopio y hacer que la iluminación fuera direccional. Sería como intentar iluminar la cabeza de un alfiler con una fuente de luz del tamaño de tu cabeza. Casi imposible</em>". </p>

<p>Por eso Jason utilizó <strong>luz reflejada y difusa por ambos lados</strong> de la hoja, hizo alrededor de <strong>200 tomas</strong> individuales de la hoja y las apiló para crear una imagen asombrosa, corrigiendo además la temperatura y el tono del color en postproducción.</p>

<p>El jurado, que dice asombrarse cada año por el nivel de talento que se presenta al concurso, destaca que la foto ganadora es "<em>un ejemplo magistral de la relación dinámica entre la tecnología de imágenes y la creatividad artística</em>". Y es que precisamente este concurso “<em>se creó para mostrar al mundo cómo el arte y la ciencia se unen bajo el microscopio y el ganador del primer puesto de este año no podría ser un mejor ejemplo de esa combinación</em>". </p>

                <title><![CDATA[Un pez cebra protagoniza los ganadores del certamen de microfotografía de Nikon Small World 2020]]></title>

    <p>Cada octubre es fecha de esperar a conocer más del asombroso mundo de la microfotografía con los ganadores del certamen de <a rel="noopener, noreferrer" href="https://www.nikonsmallworld.com/galleries/2020-photomicrography-competition/dorsal-view-of-bones-and-scales-blue-and-lymphatic-vessels-orange-in-a-juvenile-zebrafish">Nikon Small World</a>. Gracias a las distintas técnicas de captura, podemos observar texturas únicas y organismos (o parte de ellos) en grande. <strong>Así que veamos lo que trae la edición de 2020</strong>.</p>
<!-- BREAK 1 --><!--more--><p>La imagen ganadora de este año fue capturada usando una técnica de fluorescencia y un microscopio confocal. Con este método y un proceso de acople de imágenes (de 350 fotografías), el equipo de investigadores que capturaron la imagen nos pueden mostrar un pez cebra (o sus escamas en azul) y su sistema linfático (mostrado en naranja). Y <strong>eso es precisamente el mérito de la imagen</strong>.</p>

<p>Con el desarrollo de esta imagen se pudo registrar el descubrimiento que los peces cebra cuentan con un sistema linfático dentro de sus cráneos, lo cual se pensaba que solo ocurría en mamíferos. Con este descubrimiento, los animalitos pueden ser estudiados para <strong>el estudio y desarrollo de tratamientos para enfermedades cerebrales como el cáncer y el Alzheimer</strong>. </p>

<p>Este año, un total de 88 fotografías han sido destacadas. <strong>Se han dividido en el top 20, menciones de honor e imágenes de distinción</strong>.     <p>La española <strong>Ainara Pintor</strong> es la vencedora absoluta de la primera edición del <strong><em>Olympus Image of the Year Award 2019</em></strong>, nuevo certamen dedicado a la <a href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/tag/fotografia-microscopica">fotografía microscópica</a> y <a href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/tag/fotografia-cientifica">científica</a>. Como sabréis, <a href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/categoria/olympus">esta marca japonesa</a> tiene una larga tradición en el campo de la fabricación de microscopios y con este concurso pretende “<em>alentar a todo el mundo a observar las imágenes científicas de una manera nueva, apreciar su belleza y compartir imágenes con otros</em>”.</p>
<!-- BREAK 1 --><!--more--><p>Ainara ha resultado ganadora con una imagen denominada ‘<em>Neurogarden</em>’ que <strong>muestra el corte de un cerebro de ratón</strong> inmunotintado con el fin de dar una idea de la complejidad del cerebro: “<em>Hay más de 70 millones de neuronas en el cerebro de un ratón</em>” cuenta la autora, quien explica que su foto es un ejemplo de “<em>lo que podemos observar en el hipocampo de un solo corte cerebral, en este caso, tomado de ratones transgénicos Thy1</em>”.</p>

<p>Su foto, realizada con un microscopio <a rel="noopener, noreferrer" href="https://www.olympus-lifescience.com/es/microscopes/upright/cx43-33/">Olympus CX43</a> con una <a rel="noopener, noreferrer" href="https://www.olympus-lifescience.com/es/camera/color/dp27/">cámara digital microscópica DP27</a> y objetivos específicos, fue elegida entre <strong>más de 400 aspirantes de 65 países</strong>. Unos números que son bajos para otro tipo de concursos, pero que no están mal teniendo en cuenta el tipo de imágenes que se pedían y que es un certamen nuevo (aunque sustituye a uno similar que data de 2017). </p>

<p>Por supuesto, la de Ainara no fue la única imagen premiada. Así, el certamen también otorgó <strong>tres premios regionales</strong> que fueron a parar al australiano <strong>Howard Vindin</strong> (premio para Asia), el norteamericano <strong>Tagide de Carvalho</strong> (premio para América) y el británico <strong>Alan Prescott</strong> (premio para EMEA). Además, también se otorgaron diversas menciones honoríficas. </p>

    <p>La fotografía es un gran medio para explorar aquellos lugares y momentos que están escondidos ante nuestra vista aparente. Un gran ejemplo de las maravillas que se pueden encontrar están en el mundo de la fotografía microscópica, donde podemos conocer la belleza que compone el mundo. <strong>Por eso nos alegramos al ver las magníficas imágenes ganadoras del certamen de fotomicrografía <a rel="noopener, noreferrer" href="https://www.nikonsmallworld.com/">Nikon Small World de 2019</a></strong>.</p>
<!-- BREAK 1 --><!--more--><p>El certamen patrocinado por Nikon <strong>es una invitación a los fotógrafos y creadores de imágenes de la comunidad científica a mostrar el mundo microscópico</strong>. Este año, el certamen recibió más de 2.000 entradas de más de 100 países alrededor del mundo. Entre los primeros 20 finalistas se encuentran <strong>los doctores españoles Emilio Carbajal Márquez, Javier Rupérez y Guillermo López López</strong>. </p>

<p>Sin embargo, la fotografía ganadora la podéis ver abajo. Capturada por Teresa Kugler y Teresa Zgoda, quienes capturaron esta imagen utilizando una técnica de fluorescencia y estéreo micrografía. <strong>Para poder crear la imagen, las científicas debieron capturar cientos de fotos alrededor del cuerpo de este embrión de tortuga y luego utilizar una técnica de costura digital para componer la imagen final</strong>.</p>

    <p>Sacar a la luz las intrincadas (y normalmente alucinantes) formas de los insectos es el objetivo de ‘<strong>Microsculpture</strong>’, un proyecto realizado por el fotógrafo londinense <strong>Levon Biss</strong> con los especímenes de la colección del <a rel="noopener, noreferrer" href="http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/">Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad de Oxford</a>. El resultado son unas <strong>imágenes alucinantes que muestran un universo muy desconocido</strong> que sólo podemos descubrir gracias a la <a href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/tag/fotografia-cientifica">fotografía científica</a> y la <a href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/tag/fotomicrografia">fotomicrografía</a>.</p>
<!-- BREAK 1 --><!--more--><p>Los insectos son tan pequeños que solemos ignorar que ofrecen una gran variedad de formas y colores en sus diminutos cuerpos. Tanto que presentan adaptaciones múltiples que hacen que <strong>su morfología resulte tremendamente compleja e intrincada</strong>, algo que los entomólogos (la entomología es la parte de la zoología que estudia los insectos) llaman <strong>“microescultura”</strong>. De ahí viene el nombre de este proyecto que ha consistido en fotografiar estos insectos a una escala y con una resolución que posiblemente no se había visto hasta ahora.</p>

<p>Por supuesto estas increíbles fotografías no se consiguen con una sola toma. De hecho son necesarias alrededor de <strong>8.000 imágenes individuales</strong> que Levon Biss fue tomando dividiendo al sujeto (dependiendo de su tamaño) en unas 30 secciones diferentes. El equipo utilizado para realizarlo es una <a class="text-outboundlink" href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/analisis-y-pruebas/nikon-d800-la-hemos-probado" data-vars-post-title="Nikon D800: La hemos probado" data-vars-post-url="https://www.xatakafoto.com/analisis-y-pruebas/nikon-d800-la-hemos-probado">Nikon D800</a> con <strong>sensor full frame de 36 Megapíxeles</strong> más una <strong>óptica fija de 200 mm acoplada a un microscopio</strong>, aunque quizá lo más importante es la iluminación y el sistema que usa para poder controlar de forma milimétrica cómo se posicionan cámara y “modelo”.</p>

<p>Y es que, como podéis imaginar, la <a href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/tag/profundidad-de-campo">profundidad de campo</a> con la que trabaja es ínfima, tanto que <strong>cada imagen individual solo tiene una parte minúscula enfocada</strong>. Para poder capturar toda la información que necesita para crear una imagen totalmente enfocada, monta la cámara en un carril electrónico que se programa para avanzar 10 micras entre cada disparo.</p>

<p>“<em>Para dar una idea de lo lejos que es, el pelo humano promedio es de alrededor de 75 micras de ancho. La cámara entonces se mueve lentamente desde la parte delantera del insecto hasta la posterior para crear una colección de imágenes cada una de las cuales contiene sólo una pequeña parte en foco</em>”. Luego, gracias a un <strong>proceso de apilamiento de fotos consigue fusionarlas</strong> para crear una sola imagen con un enfoque completo en toda la profundidad del insecto.</p>

<p>En cuanto al tema de la iluminación, al fotografiar a los insectos Levon Biss tiene que ir <strong>iluminando cada pequeña parte de forma individual</strong> con luz estroboscópica. “<em>Por ejemplo, puedo iluminar y capturar sólo una antena, y luego de haber completado ese área me moveré al ojo teniendo que cambiar completamente la iluminación para adaptarme a la textura y los contornos de esa parte específica del cuerpo. Continuo este proceso hasta que he cubierto toda la superficie del insecto</em>”. En el siguiente vídeo podéis ver con más detalle el proceso de las tomas.</p>

<p>La formación de algo tan sencillo como un <strong>copo de nieve</strong> es un pequeño milagro de la naturaleza. Su perfecta geometría y su impecable armonía solo pueden proceder del mejor artesano que conocemos. Algo más allá de las capacidades del hombre.</p>

<p>No sé cuál fue el propósito de <strong>Vyacheslav Ivanov</strong>, el autor de este precioso y evocador <em>time lapse</em>, cuando se propuso llevarlo a cabo. Pero, sin duda, si su objetivo era incidir directamente en la sensibilidad de muchas de las personas que lo vean y deslumbrarnos ante la majestuosidad con que se manifiesta la naturaleza, incluso, en los fenómenos más diminutos, probablemente lo ha conseguido.</p>
<!-- BREAK 2 --><!--more--><p>No me cabe duda de que este es el vídeo más apacible que he contemplado durante los últimos meses. Y una parte de la responsabilidad la tiene <strong>la música</strong> que, a mi entender, ha elegido con acierto Ivanov.</p>

<p>El tema que suena durante los dos minutos que dura este <em>time lapse</em> es <em>Avril 14th</em>, que podemos encontrar en el álbum <em>drukQs</em> del compositor de música electrónica <strong>Richard David James</strong>, más conocido por su seudónimo <strong>Aphex Twin</strong>.</p>

                <title><![CDATA[Microfotografía extrema de 281 Gigapixels]]></title>

<p>En general hemos visto tomar fotografías de estos tamaños descomunales de grandes espacios panorámicos. Pero en esta ocasión, unos científicos de Holanda han realizado esta técnica para obtener una imagen <strong>de un embrión de un pez cebra de 1,5 milímetros de largo</strong>.</p>

<p>Esta técnica, combinada con una aplicación online, da lugar a lo que han bautizado con el nombre de <strong>nanoscopia virtual</strong>. La nanoscopia virtual nos ofrece la posibilidad de navegar por imágenes microscópicas con una interfaz semejante a la de Google Earth, a través de una aplicación llamada <strong>DataViewer <span class="caps">JCB</span></strong>. De este modo, podemos partir de la imagen general del embrión e ir haciendo zoom hasta niveles por debajo de las estructuras celulares.</p>

<p>La aplicación científica es evidente. Si el microscopio nos proporciona el detalle de una zona concreta, con esta técnica fotográfica podríamos explorar líbremente con el ordenador cualquier parte del objeto analizado. Para ello, la técnica es muy semejante a la que se realiza en las fotografías panorámicas. Se han tomado <strong>un total de 26.000 nanofotografías</strong> que después han sido ensambladas con el software correspondiente.     <p>Hace poco hemos hablado y debatido sobre <a class="text-outboundlink" href="https://www.xatakafoto.com/opinion/moviles-vs-compactas" data-vars-post-title="Móviles vs compactas" data-vars-post-url="https://www.xatakafoto.com/opinion/moviles-vs-compactas">las cámaras en los móviles</a>, tanto de sus virtudes como de sus defectos. Y ahora nos encontramos con <strong>una exposición de Javier Castañeda, que se basa exclusivamente en fotos tomádas con un teléfono móvil</strong>.</p>

<p>Se trata de un hombre que se define como <strong>un incansable observador de núcleos urbanos y de espíritu viajero</strong>. Un día alguien le regaló un móvil con cámara, y desde entonces ha recorrido el mundo fotografiando todo lo que veía.</p>

<p>Desde el 2008 nos enseña todo lo que le parece curioso, a través de su móvil, en el blog <a rel="noopener, noreferrer" href="http://blogs.elpais.com/micrografias/">micrografías</a>.</p>
<!--more--><p><strong>Micrografías® nace de un apareamiento incierto acaecido en las Islas Griegas entre micro (μικρο, pequeño) y -grafía (-γραφία, de la raíz de γράφειν, escribir), que significa descripción, tratado, escritura o representación gráfica</strong>. Define una categoría de fotografías realizadas exclusivamente con móvil.</p>

<p>Después de esta aventura, ha decidido realizar una <strong>exposición en el Museo de Ciencia y Tecnología de Milán</strong>, enmarcada en el <em>Festival Digital Entertainment Jam 09</em>, sobre las tendencias de este nuevo siglo, mediante una recopilación de 300 fotografías. Las cuales muestran a vista de móvil todo tipo de ciudades, desde Madrid hasta Nueva York, pasando por Tokio.</p>

    <p>Nikon celebra cada año desde 1974 un concurso de <strong>micrografia</strong>, ¿que qué es eso? La Wikipedia viene a decir que es hacer fotos con un microscopio. Micro, que no macro... así que está dificil eso de hacer en casa este tipo de fotografía.</p>

<p>Es un <strong>concurso científico y artístico</strong>, en el que este año se han presentado 1700 personas nada más y nada menos. La imagen ganadora es esta que les presento del <strong>feto de 18 días de un ratón transgénico</strong> que está tomada con microscopía de campo ancho y con flurescencia roja y verde. ( Ni se les ocurra preguntarme cómo se hace eso )</p>

<p>Resulta realmente interesante ver las fotografías ganadoras de este año. Les propongo que <strong>intenten adivinar qué es cada foto</strong> para que se les pase la pena de la vuelta al trabajo tras el puente del Pilar.</p>
