Aunque suelen ser una categoría incluida en los distintos concursos de fotografía de animales o de vida salvaje (como por ejemplo el conocido Wildlife Photographer of the Year o el español MontPhoto), las aves también tienen su propia competición internacional, el Bird Photographer of the Year, que acaba de hacer públicos los resultados de la que es su tercera edición.
De origen británico, la competición está organizada por Nature Photographers Ltd en conjunción con The British Trust for Ornithology, entidad benéfica independiente dedicada al estudio de la vida silvestre y a la que van destinados los fondos que se consiguen con el concurso (la participación no es gratuita). El certamen pretende ser “una celebración de la belleza y diversidad de las aves, y un tributo a la flexibilidad y calidad de los modernos sistemas de imagen digital actuales”.
El Bird Photographer of the Year se compone de siete categorías y dos premios especiales (‘Bird Photographer of the Year’ y ‘Young Bird Photographer of the Year’), más otro al mejor portfolio. En esta edición de 2018, la organización se felicita por haber crecido tanto en calidad como en número de participantes (aunque no dan datos concretos) provenientes de más de 60 países. Entre ellos se han repartido una serie de premios tanto en métalico como en especie, destacando un primer premio dotado con cinco mil libras para el vencedor absoluto o dos mil libras para el ganador del mejor portfolio.

En este caso, el ganador absoluto, que sería el “Mejor fotógrafo de aves del año” según el concurso, es el peruano Pedro Jarque Krebs con la foto 'Black Friday' que habéis visto en portada. Esta imagen también venció en la categoría ‘Creative Imaginery’, única en la que se acepta la manipulación digital de las fotografías. Para Rob Read, miembro de la organización y juez, la foto “es una imagen poco menos que explosiva […] Un ejemplo de ‘punk rock fotográfico’.”
En cuanto a la participación nacional, hay que destacar que hay dos fotógrafos españoles entre los premiados: Salvador Colvée ganador en la categoría ‘Birds in the Environment’ y Mario Suárez Porras que se ha llevado nada menos que tres premios en tres categorías distintas.
Por supuesto felicitamos a ambos (así como al resto de ganadores, claro) y os dejamos con las fotografías ganadoras. Eso sí, hay que comentar también que las fotos se podrán disfrutar en un fotolibro y también en una exposición itinerante.
